Can the news be biased against immigrants?

Many articles online spread a false narrative and overall look on immigrants in numerous amount of ways. Apart from this, the derogation of immigrants tends to arrive mainly from conservative news networks. In an article called “ICE nabs dozens of illegal immigrants, some with sex crime convictions, in New York” written by Fox News journalist Adam Shaw, he explains that during a series of ICE organized raids they arrested 107 illegals with criminal convictions. The article goes on to imply that democrats are attempting to prevent ICE from doing their job, and arresting these supposed criminals by stating that the “agency, which has faced calls for its abolition from left-wing activists and a number of 2020 Democratic Party hopefuls.”

The issue with these articles is how they are stating the information to the reader. I am not saying journalist should be sugar coating information, but to get the full picture. In the article, Adam Shaw made it seem as if there is a large amount of criminals in our country, and insinuated that democrats, and sanctuary cities are attempting to stop ICE from effectively doing their job. This type of rhetoric erupts panic within the American people by convincing them that immigrants are rushing to America with mal-intent. The article does this by stating a long list of horrendous crimes committed by the few immigrants such as “...rape 2nd degree, rape 3rd degree, resisting officer, robbery, sexual abuse, sexual misconduct, stalking, trademark counterfeiting, trafficking in cocaine, …,” and so on. When in truth, many immigrants are just normal people like in any other community, and (like in any normal community) there are bound to be a loose-cannon or two. Although, it should not represent said community as a whole. This type of scare tactic is also used against Muslims. The actions of a few extremist typically display the Muslims community as a whole, which is not right nor should they be punished for it.

Immigrants come from all around the world, and their suffering from the journey alone tend to have no bounds.

Immigration is often perceived as an easy progress to complete by anyone, especially with Trump’s vocal opinion on immigration. However, contrary to popular belief immigration is actually a time consuming, expensive, and fraudulent in many occasions. For cost alone, is the reason a large percentage of immigrants tend to be wealthy rather than mainly poor.

As stated in the before, the article suggest democrats are preventing ICE from effectively doing their job. The issue is that ICE has actually made plenty mistakes when it comes to arresting suspected criminals. According to an article called “ICE held an American man in custody for 1,273 days. He’s not the only one who had to prove his citizenship,” written by the Los Angeles Times it states that a U.S. citizen named Davino Watson was detained by ICE for three years, and was nearly deported. The problems do not stop there. In the same article, Los Angeles Times also discovered that since 2012, ICE has mistakenly taken into custody 1, 480 Americans. Another controversial mistake ICE has made occurred in January 2019. According to Fox News, ICE detained marine veteran Jilmar Ramos-Gomez, who has PTSD, and held him for possible deportation.

For these mistakes alone, give light to the fact that ICE does not always do their job effectively, and tend to make as many mistakes as they do accomplishments. I agree our border security could be significantly better, although, smearing it as a national crisis is not realistic nor acceptable. Conservative news networks, such as Fox News, should bring a full picture of the immigration issue, and be impartial, and not be prejudice against immigrants. Biasness does not fix a problem, but deepens the pit of the problem. Hopefully, we can come together as a country and find a sound solution to our immigration issue in a manner without sounding bleat.
