US-Mexico Border

Updated: May 9, 2019

According to the article, “National Emergency: Is there a crisis on the US-Mexico border?” by Micah Luxen, Jessica Lussenhop and Rajini Vaidyanathan informs is that president Donald Trump while announcing his plans of the US-Mexico border would repeatedly use the word “invasion” to give people an idea of the situation along the border with Mexico. The article also gives us an estimate of people that have crossed the border in past years and how the number of people coming to the US illegally has changed. The article states, “CBP made a total of 396,579 apprehensions on the south-western border in fiscal year 2018, and 303,916 in 2017” (Luxen,Lussenhop,Vaidyanathan,2019). but according to other statistics the first year of Trump's presidency which was 2017, the rate of people coming to the US illegally was the lowest one since 2000. With this statistics people are asking themselves is there really a crisis in the US-Mexico border and if the government should waste so much money on building the new wall with money that is being taken away from taxpayers. Also, people are not just coming from the southern border, there is also illegal people coming into the US through the Canadian and coastal border. Immigrants coming from Mexico aren’t only the ones who are coming to the US illegally. Not all the people that are illegally in the US are people that cross the border illegally. For example, there are people that there visas expired and never went back to their country and decided to stay in the US illegally.

The article also gives us important statistics of the number of people that come to the US-Mexico border to ask for refugee. The article states that, “In fiscal year 2018, 92,959 people were deemed to have made claims of credible fear" (Luxen,Lussenhop,Vaidyanathan,2019). and asked for asylum at the border. That's a pretty big jump from fiscal year 2017, when 55,584 claims were made.” Many people are coming to the US-Mexico border to ask for refugee since they are trying to flee from the chaos of their country but since there are many people asking for refugee some decide to cross the border illegally.  For example, in November of 2018 many people from Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador came the US border asking for refugee, meanwhile, President Trump was categorizing this caravana as invasions. In my opinion this people are trying to come to the US to seek for better opportunity than what their countries would offer. To be able to have a better future without violence. Some might take the decision to cross the border illegally because they have fear they would be taken back to their countries and not be given the opportunity to come into the US. After all, the number of people that cross the border illegally has declined over the years and my thoughts is that there is no necessity to build a wall that will cost billions. People will always find new ways in how to cross the border and come to the US in search of a better future.
