Will the border wall prevent immigration?

Since 2016, when Donald Trump started to run in the elections for president his major argument was to stop immigration. As stated in the article, " Immigration under Trump: A review of Policy Shifts in the Year Since the Election" by Sarah Pierce and Andrew Sele they state that, " On the Campaign trail, Donald Trump made immigration the centerpiece of his campaign, offering a more detailed policy agenda than on many other issues." Donald Trump has argued and still argues that creating a wall, which will separate Mexico and the united states, will stop immigration. His planes for the big wall are a concrete wall that will be at least 30 foot high. Even though there's a fence wall that separates the united states and Mexico, Trump has argued that the fence may be appropriate in certain areas but having a concrete wall will be better way to keep immigrants out of the United States (Bier, 2017).

The government has been shut down three times since Donald Trump was elected to be the president of the United States, which the shutdown lasted 34 days and it is considered as one of the longest government shutdowns. The reason why the government has been shut down is because Donald Trump and Democrats failed to come to an agreement between the funds that need to be provided for the wall to be constructed (Rohrlich, 2018). Even though the government has been shut down because there was no agreement, the wall is now being built.

Among all Americans a 58 percent of them oppose the idea of building the wall and the other 41 percent of Americans are in favor of Trump's idea to construct the wall. But still many people have not realized or have not been informed that the wall has been built in certain areas. So far, the 30-foot-high wall has been built seven miles long, even though there’s still a lot of wall left to be built. The first border wall constructed was near downtown Calexico, California and the second border wall were built about 120 miles east of San Diego (Geraghty, 2018).

But why is building the wall so important? As stated, Donald Trump’s key promises for his election campaign was to build the wall between the united states and Mexico. Trump’s major intentions in building the wall is to prevent people from entering the United States illegally. But the true question is, is the wall really going to stop people for crossing the border?  People who come or even are planning to move legally or illegally to the united states is because they are looking for a better life. For those people who want to enter the united states illegally, the 30-foot-high wall will not be an obstacle. Each year there is an estimation that 500,000 people enter illegally and about 6.5 million of undocumented immigrants are currently in the united states (Goldstein).

There are millions of ways people could cross over to the united states, and the wall will not prevent that. There are millions of way but the two most popular ways in crossing the border are by the help of “coyotes”, the second way is by having a tourist visa and staying in the united states beyond the deadline, which is around 30 to 50 percent of the illegal immigrant population (Goldstein).
